Where to find early ice walleyes

Last year, a fluttering version of the bait, called the Buck-Shot Flutter Spoon , was good for early season walleyes as well. This bait falls a bit slower and is ideal when the fish are a bit more tentative.

The original Buck-Shots and the new fluttering versions come in UV colors for increased visibility. Getting set up early, being quiet, and using jigging spoons are great tips for early ice walleye fishing success. A final tip is to use a winter sonar unit if possible. For example, some days aggressive lift and fall jigging tactics lead to bites.

Other times, a longer pause at the end of the fall is important. While on other days, more subtle rocking-type jig motions work well. Now, open up the Google Maps app on your phone or mobile device, and presto: the magic of 21st century technology has your futureinch-hole-location displayed in its correct position, making it easy to find when you hit the ice. This shallow weed pattern is all about timing.

Indeed, this is a low-light pattern, so plan to hit the ice in mid-afternoon, drill ALL of your holes at least an hour before the sun hits the treetops, and then settle in for the evening rush. I recommend that you drill at least 3 times as many holes as your local regulations allow you to fish through at any one time, which will make it easy to relocate your efforts quickly, without additional drilling noise, when the bite fires up.

On our local Wisconsin waters, where 3 lines are allowed per angler, a group of three might be drilling out 30 holes, giving them comprehensive coverage of several weedbeds on one shallow flat. We make extensive use of Aqua-Vu underwater camera systems to ensure that the weedbeds we are drilling around feature robust, walleye-attracting green weeds rather than fish-repelling brown ones.

Underwater video is also a powerful tool for fine-tuning hole position. When holes are too close to the greenery, active minnows beneath tip-ups will constantly become entangled in weed leaves and stems. Shallow, early-season walleyes are generally aggressive, so use a jigging presentation to match their mood. Have the rattlebait pound the bottom every few rips.

One thing to keep in mind is that the presentation that called them in might not be the one that makes them commit. Pay close attention when you are marking a fish. When did they bite or decide not to take the bait? Both situations can get you closer to dialing them in. With any good jigging strategy, make sure to keep a dead stick present. A small jig with a minnow is the perfect combination to catch any walleye that may have been called in and are not ready to commit to something moving more erratic.
