Why are quarters notched

What this means is that the general fought in this battle, if one leg is up he survived, if all four are down, so was he in that battle. This is useful in my home town of Boston, MA. Fun piece of trivia - and I love having these little pieces of info that no one else knows the answers to - sometimes it actually makes me look smarter than I am!

I asked a couple people here at Headquarters, no pun intended, and you should here the reasons they came up with! How did the origial numbers come to be and how is their association with the word?

It's also helpful that they left them that way. My brother is blind, and visually impaired people use the ridges and smooth edges to tell which coin is which. I had no idea that was the reason. So, why in the 40s when even the metal in pennies became valuable because of the war didn't they groove them during that time? Gary, thanks for this tidbit of information..
