He had pictures of all these characters, so I had a really good visual stimulus to get going. So, yes, they had all of Burton's original drawings, the poem, and some songs. And while the final screenplay is credited to Caroline Thompson , there was additional work by Michael McDowell, a horror novelist and "Beetlejuice" screenwriter, who helped initially move Burton's poem into movie-form.
Since the script was finished after the songs, the animators initially worked on the musical numbers, starting with the first song, "This Is Halloween. This is definitely true of the "This Is Halloween" sequence, which is visually stunning but also a little rough around the edges. Interestingly, ahead of the film's release, Elfman cited that "Nightmare Before Christmas" was "the greatest collaboration I'd ever been involved with," even though disagreements on the film led to a very public falling out with Burton.
Elfman, who provides Jack with his singing voice, had also laid down vocal tracks for his speaking role, too. Selick and Burton found his dialogue delivery unsatisfactory and replaced him with " Fright Night " actor Chris Sarandon. Elfman also does the speaking voice for Barrel, one of Oogie Boogie's henchmen. But Elfman, who had grown quite attached to Jack, felt slighted, which led to him parting ways with Burton.
They wouldn't work together again until One of the movie's best, grossest gags is the reveal of Oogie Boogie's true self -- a mass of wiggling worms. This was one of the most difficult sequences in the entire film, consisting of four incredibly detailed shots that each took a full month to create and animate see 3. But there was even more to this sequence originally. Early storyboards revealed "a surprisingly different storyline that ultimately wasn't pursued" according to Selick on the Blu-ray special features , one in which, when Oogie Boogie is split open, Dr.
Finklestein is revealed inside. The man who created Sally from bits of flesh and scraps of cloth! As Oogie Boogie, I wanted to teach her a lesson she'd never forget! There was one additional surprise as a trap door on Boogie's roulette table opens up to reveal the doctor's hunch-backed assistant Igor.
Even in rough form, it's clear that the sequence didn't really work and was wisely cut. Bye bye, Boogie. If you have watched the credits for "The Nightmare Before Christmas" as much as I have, you'll notice that a small team from Pixar is given a credit.
Although Elfman would sing as Jack, it was determined that his voice was simply not polished enough to pull off the dialogue and actor Chris Sarandon stepped in. Busy with his other projects, Burton took a hands-off approach to the production once it was underway, checking in personally only intermittently and following the progression of dailies. Though most animated musicals only have an average of about five or six tunes, Burton decided to animate all 10 and the reprise, retaining the option of cutting a song or two if it felt like too much.
Since Jack is in almost every scene, every animator was going to have to work on him at one point or another. But the strongest Sally animator was this guy called Trey Thomas, who like rode a motorcycle, was unshaven, a heavy cigarette smoker, the most macho guy you could imagine, but he had this delicacy with Sally. So in that case it was more about casting the right animator to bring a rag doll to life.
Oogie was a wrestling match. Mike Belzer did that one and it almost killed him, but we were all very happy with the result. Interestingly, despite having a ticking clock and multiple deadlines looming over a very slow and meticulous process, Selick and his team of animators often found room for improvisation and creative surprises. And 99 times out of the final was the final. And of course many of your readers and followers of stop-motion animation know that Ray Harryhausen got his first job in Hollywood working for the George Pal on the Puppetoons.
Ray related many stories to me about that experience and how influential and important they were and Pal in general. You managed to write a text about this movie without mentioning the actual director even once. Truly impressive. The original Burton poem was three pages long and only featured Jack, Zero and Santa. Disney did very briefly consider making it but wanted to do so in cel animation and Burton did not care for that idea.
Henry Selick who was also there at the studio at the time was a huge supporter of the project. Actually after Thompson was brought on to write the script, another song was added for Sally since she made that character more important. Thompson had been living with Elfman so was very familiar with the songs and general story and characters before being brought in to script.
Joe Ranft also worked on storyboards from that script and added some touches. Somehow I thought of a Halloween Town to match the North Pole and took images and just sort of twisted them together. Hi Jim, thanks for reading the piece.
I did extensive interviews with most of the key players associated with the film, including director Henry Selick, Tim Burton, Dany Elfman, Caroline Thompson, Rick Heinrichs, many animators, artists, etc. I have no idea if and when that book will be released as it is in the hands of Disney Editions. He masterfully blends interviews with Tim Burton, Danny Elman, and myself—along with many of the talented artists who worked on the film—into a very nuanced and personal picture of how the movie actually came together, was made, and went from a cult favorite to a holiday classic.
Great treat to watch, hear, and feel the effects. Great fun for the whole family. But I have experienced the 4D at the El Capitan Theater in Hollywood, as recently as last year, and it is spectactular! Wait, Disney actually considered forming a division called Touchstone Animation? Imagine if they actually went through with it, and if they made more than just Nightmare; what kind of films would they have made?
